Pietro Fernando "Pete" Messina, was born on January 22, 1912, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Fernando Sam Messina and Anna Manzula Messina.


He graduated from St. Mary's High School, Marshalltown, and served overseas during World War II. He married Alice M. Gregory on August 3, 1946, in Auburn, New York.


Pete was employed as a mechanic at Bos Truck Lines and other garages in Marshalltown before his retirement. He resided at 703 E. Boone St., Marshalltown. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the American Legion, and the Teamsters Union.


Pietro F. Messina passed away on Wednesday morning, July 20, 1977, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. He had been a patient there for one week.


He is survived by his widow, Alice; his children, Peggy (James R.) Robinson and Peter Messina, both of Marshalltown; a sister Sadie (Harvey) Bateson; 2 brothers, Charles Messina and Michael Messina; and 3 grandchildren, all of Marshalltown. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Carolina, and a granddaughter, Michele Marie Robinson, Memorial #101133087.


Arrangements were by and a Rosary was recited on Friday, July 22, 1977, at 8 p.m. at the Avey Funeral Home in Marshalltown. Funeral Mass was celebrated by Fr. Claude Norton on Saturday, July 23, 1977, at 10 a.m., at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Marshalltown. Pallbearers were Earl Bachel, James Hilsabeck, Evertt Lins, James Bacino, Tony Salomone, and Bill Peterson. Attending in groups were the American Legion and the Teamsters Union.
