Bernard Francis Dechant, 51, of Lucinda died Monday afternoon, Nov. 23, 2009, in his home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 24, 1958, in Brookville, he was the son of Edward F. and Cecelia K. Karg Dechant.

He was a 1977 graduate of North Clarion High School.

He married the former Julianne Kennedy on Sept. 16, 1996, and she survives.

Mr. Dechant operated Dechant's Strawberry Farm in Lucinda, which his parents started 40 years ago. Farming was his life, and he enjoyed talking to people at Dechant's farm market.

He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Lucinda and the Lucinda Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau.

In addition to his father, Edward F. Dechant of Lucinda, and his wife, Julianne, Mr. Dechant is survived by five children, Alicia, Breanna and Marisa Dechant and Tyler and Laura Weisenstein, all of Lucinda.

He also is survived by four brothers and two sisters, Michael Joseph Dechant and his wife, Veronica "Bonnie," of Marienville, Joseph Henry Dechant of Shippenville, Mark Edward Dechant and his wife, Agnes, of Lucinda, Lee Alan Dechant and his wife, Linda, of Lucinda, Julianna Hockman and her husband, Anthony Lee, of Shippenville and Genevieve Wright and her husband, Jeffrey M., of Rochester Mills.

Mr. Dechant was preceded in death by his mother, Cecelia K. Dechant, who died Feb. 25, 2009.
Friends and family may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Borland Funeral Home in Leeper.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Joseph Church in Lucinda with the Rev. William C. Miller, pastor of the church, as celebrant.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
