My grandfather immigrated to the United States from Hungary and came through Ellis Island on October 24, 1911. His village in Hungary was Bikacs in the county of Tolna, and was predominantly German and Evangelical Lutheran. It's believed the families that settled the village had migrated west from the Vienna area.

After leaving Hungary, Grandpa settled in Akron, OH where jobs were plentiful. He married first Elizabeth Schneider who died in the flu epidemic in 1918, and then second, her sister Mary Schneider. Grandpa worked many years at the General Tire and was a workhorse around the house. He was very active in the German American Club in Akron, and remained close with his fellow immigrants from Hungary. He also helped raise his three granddaughters, as well as helping his daughter maintain her house after the death of her husband. He remained active and healthy for most of his life, and even continued mowing his lawn into his 90s.

He taught me two great things in life. First, "Keep your head warm, that's the main thing. " Second, "Don't owe nobody nothing!"
