In 1918, the family moved to Mackay, Idaho, a booming mining town, where his father started a blacksmith shop. Virgil and Veron often helped out in the shop.
Virgil was very helpful to the neighbors. One family in particular was the widow of Edgar Ewing. Later in life, the widow Lillie Ewing would tell how Virgil was always at the ranch helping out and what a wonderful young man he was. "One of the main reasons", said Virgil, "was that he was interested in her daughter Dorothy". On December 28, 1932, Dorothy and Virgil were married.
By 1941, Virgil, Dorothy and their 3 children left Mackay and moved to Southern California. They first settled in Santa Monica. While there a fourth child was born in 1946.
Virgil found work at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Santa Monica. He was an Oxygraph Operator and remained employed with Douglas until his retirement.
In 1947 Virgil bought a house in Venice. There he raised his four children, had a small garden and various small animals. Virgil was very handy. He could fix anything and ususally had some parts left over! He loved gagets and would buy any strange thing that took his fancy.
Sadly, in 1956 Virgil lost his twin brother Veron and his wife Dorothy.
Later Virgil remarried twice more and after the death of his second wife moved to Lake Elsinore where he lived with his third wife until his death in 1991.
