Third Jewish Chaplain in U.S. Armed Forces and first to serve in battle (at Gettysburg).

Education: Studied at the Royal Friedrich Wilhelm University, now Humboldt University in Berlin and at the University of Hesse, from which he received a Ph.D. in 1858.

From 1872 until his death, served as rabbi of Congregation Beth El Emeth in Memphis

Died in Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878 in Memphis.
