Rev. Gene Malcolm 'Mack' Hamby Sr.

FLORENCE -- Funeral for the Rev. Gene Malcolm "Mack" Hamby Sr., 91, of Florence will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Elkins Funeral Home with the Rev. George Cobb and the Rev. Mickey Davis officiating.

Burial will be in Florence City Cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 6 to 8 at the funeral home.

Mr. Hamby died Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Sunbridge-Shoals Nursing Home in Tuscumbia. He was born May 6, 1910, in Tuscaloosa to Lugene Bryant Hamby and Martha Alexander Hamby. He went into the ministry at age 17, attending Asbury College in Kentucky and graduating from Birmingham Southern College. Admitted to the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church in 1934, he served as a conference evangelist for many years. He also served as pastor of Oakland United Methodist Church in Lauderdale County, Westhaven United Methodist Church in Birmingham and McKendree and Moss Chapel United Methodist churches in Morgan County and Hillsboro and Chalybeate United Methodist churches in Lawrence County. He was the widower of Katherine Koonce Hamby.

Survivors include one son, Gene M. Hamby Jr.; one daughter, Jeannine Keenum of Athens; six grandchildren; and two great-grandsons.

Pallbearers will be Mark Hamby, James Keenum, Eddie Nix, Glenn Rose, Lance Dean and Barry Hightower.

Memorials may be made to the missions fund at First United Methodist Church in Florence or First United Methodist Church in Sheffield.
