Bettye was born Holland, Texas, the seventh of nine children, all deceased, of the late Owen and Mary Lillian (Duck) Goodnight. Following graduation from Holland High School, she attended Scott and White Nursing School in Temple, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1949. On June 10 of that same year, she was married to Hubert B. Nutt Jr., of Valley Mills, at the home of the Valley Mills Baptist minister. Theirs was a loving partnership and marriage which lasted more than 61 years. After college, Bettye and her husband lived in Birmingham, Ala., where she worked as a nurse. The couple returned to Valley Mills, where they raised their three daughters and Bettye worked in Meridian, Valley Mills, and for more than 30 years, in Clifton at Goodall-Witcher Clinic/Hospital. She and her husband both retired in 1986.
She was a Girl Scout Leader and avid supporter of athletics and all school functions in which her girls were involved. Bettye loved the outdoors, camping, fishing, boating, and spending Christmas, holidays, weekends and special summer times with extended family at their lake house on Lake Whitney. She also enjoyed gardening, playing bridge and dominoes, cooking and baking for family and friends, working alongside her husband on the farm, her pets, and all endeavors of her church home, First Baptist Church of Valley Mills. She spent many years as devoted caretaker for her mother-in-law, and even near the end of her own life, her concern was still for that of her husband and family. Bettye enjoyed life to the fullest, and was known for her laughter, her plain-spokenness, and her ability to make the best out of any situation or circumstance.
Survivors include her husband, Hubert Nutt Jr., of Valley Mills; daughters, Elisa Campbell and husband, James, of Sachse, Texas, Kimberly Smith and husband, Monty, of Brandon, Texas, and Renee Cauley and husband, Patrick, of Lewisville, Texas; grandchildren, Hannah Cauley, of Atlanta, Ga., Jordan Cauley, of Clinton, Miss., Riley and Owen Cauley, of Lewisville, and Trevor and Kaitlyn Smith, of Brandon; and many other loving family members and friends.
