William H. Schaeffer, a veteran of the Spanish-American War, died yesterday morning at his home, Catasauqua avenue, of a complication of diseases after several weeks' illness. He was 43 years, 8 months and 18 days of age and was born at Shartlesville, Berks county, the son of the late John and Mary Schaeffer. He learned carpentering in his youth. In the Spanish-American War, he was a member of Company M., Fourth Regiment, P.V., of Pottstown. He was mustered in July 6, 1898, and was mustered out with his company November 16, 1898. He participated in the Porto Rico campaign. His discharge papers give him an "honest and faithful" record. Following his discharge he came to Allentown and for a time was in railroad service. He lost a foot in an accident and for the last few years was an elevator attendant. There survive his wife, Fannie, nee Grover, three children, Howard M., Anna May, Margaret J.; two step-children, Helen and Margaret J., and a brother, Calvin Schaeffer. The funeral will be held on Friday at 3 p.m. with services at his home. Interment will be made in Greenwood cemetery. Deceased was a member of the Camp George W. Schwartz No. 2, United Spanish War Veterans.
