Per LaMona J Waldron Phillips 01/14/2011:
Jasper Newton Barnett was thought to be born Lauderdale Co., Alabama He died in Franklin Co., AR He is missing from the 1900 census. There is a letter written to LaMona Waldron Phillips 1997 stating Jasper N Barnett was buried in unknown grave without a headston Belt Cemetery. His parents are AB (Asberry), etc, Barnett and Mary Brewer. His brother Silas L Barnett gave his mother's maiden name on his CW Pensision application.

**Follow-up regarding full name and place of birth per Doyle Woodruff 04/01/2023:
Most records list his name as "Newton J. Barnett" including the earliest record the 1850 U.S. Census. His place of birth is listed as "Leek County, Alabama" on his Civil War enlistment (as well as his brother's Silas Barnett). There has never been a county by that name so it was evidently an clerical error. There IS however a "Leake County, Mississippi" and that is where I have located the family group at the time of both brother's births using the 1845 Mississippi State Census as well as several county tax records.

Per Lanny Barnett 7/14/2011:
LaMona, I believe the birth date for Jasper Newton Barnett is correct at Feb 4 1845, but I also know what my grandfather told me about his dad's death. Tom T Barnett told me that he himself was 7 years old when his father Newt was killed. He then went to live with the Rossom family, his half sister down on the mulberry river. This was all told to me while we were walking around that area discussing his childhood. Now Tom T Barnett was born November 29, 1879 I know that for a fact. So if he was 7 years old when Newt was killed that would make Jasper Newton Barnett's year of death 1886 . I know he told me it was the cold time of the year and he had come in from the barn, got up close to the fire and lit his pipe and died. I have some hard copy data somewhere that I put together many years ago, I just need to find it.

**Follow-up regarding date of death per Doyle Woodruff 04/21/2023:
There is a county tax record for "N. J. Barnett" in Watalula as late as 1889, so I am now estimating that date on this memorial. By 1893 (and probably a little earlier but some tax years are missing) the property is in the name of his widow "Mrs. Addie Barnett".
