An Old Chambers County Citizen Gone.

On last Thursday night, in Atlanta, Mr. John S. Prather, a former Chambers County citizen, died at the mature age of 102 years. He was born in Orange County, North Carolina, in 1797, and in 1835 he removed to Alabama, making his home near LaFayette, where he began farming, which occupation he followed until the death of his wife, eight years ago, at which time he went to Atlanta and has since resided with his daughter, Mrs. S. L. Harris, on Bellwood Avenue. Mr. Prather had eight children, three of whom survive him, Col. Jno. S. Prather, Mrs. S. L. Harris and Mrs. W. A. Martin. He had at the time of his death fourteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. His remains were brought to LaFayette on last Friday where the interment took place beside the grave of his wife. Mr. Prather lived in this county during the time when the Indians were scattered over the land. He was an upright, highly esteemed citizen and had been a consistent member of the Baptist Church for several years. The bereaved ones have the sympathy of a host of friends in their bereavement. A more extended notice will appear later.

Information from F.A.G. Member #48621264:

My best understanding of his (John S. Prather) children is as follows:

1. Frances Prather, born 1833, died 1846 (best guess, died AL)
2. Christopher Prather, born 1835, died 1842 (best guess, died AL)
3. John Smith Prather (V), born July 5, 1837, died March 12, 1920 (died Decatur, GA)
4. Mary Jane Prather, born January 3, 1840, died June 2, 1920 in Atlanta, Fulton County, GA. Married 1858 in Chambers County, AL to Rev. Stapleton Lanier Harris.
5. Sarah "Sallie" E. Prather, born February 2, 1845, died April 1, 1924 [Eva Prather's history lists her as Sarah Isabel, and in a letter to my great-grandmother she is listed as Sarah Willis Prather, but I have seen her most commonly shown as Sarah E. Prather - still searching my family records for something more concrete] (died Atlanta, Fulton, GA)
6. James Lawrence Prather (June 9, 1847 - 1893) (died Chambers County, AL)
7. Lucy Ann Whitaker Prather (May 7, 1849 - 1875) (died LaFayette, Chambers, AL)
