James Wendell Smith, Sr

COLOMA - James Wendell Smith, 76, of Coloma passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2004, at White Oaks Assisted Living Facility, Lawton.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004, at Davidson Chapel, Florin Funeral Service, Coloma, with the Rev. Ann Slade officiating. Burial will follow in Coloma Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to North Berrien Historical Society or Hospice at Home, c/o Davidson Chapel.

Wendell was born May 11, 1927, in St. Joseph, to Max R. and Aileen (Saye) Smith. He graduated from Coloma High School, enlisting in the Army soon after graduation to serve his country during World War II. Returning from a tour of duty in Europe. Wendell married his high school sweetheart, Lois Wolff, on April 21, 1948, and they shared 55 years together. Wendell graduated from Michigan State University, and then located to Lawrence, to take over the family fruit farms. After more than 40 years of farming, Wendell and Lois retired, returning to his parents' home in Coloma. He was a member of South Haven River Bend Boat Club, Coloma American Legion Post 362, and the Masons of Coloma.

Wendell was very involved in the North Berrien Historical Society, and was proud of its growth and new exhibits. He loved boating on Lake Michigan, watching Michigan State sports, and being with his family, especially his grandson, Gary. He will be missed by his many friends and neighbors.

Wendell is survived by his wife, Lois; two sons--Jerry (Shirley) Smith of Melbourne, Fla, and James "Jim" Smith Jr. of Coloma; two daughters--Betty Pries of Berwyn, Ill, and Susan (Bruce) Herron of Paw Paw, grandson, Gary Pries Jr. of Berwyn; brother, R. Lyndon (Nancy) Smith of Richland, Mich; brother-in-law, Leroy (Joyce) Wolff of Indian Rocks Beach, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Lois M. Smith.
