Marvin Gwyn Elliott passed away on Sunday, January 9, 2011, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center after a lengthy struggle with cancer.
Marvin was born in Clifton Township, Ashe County, North Carolina, on July 1, 1928. He was the son of the late Milton Elliott and Ella Riddle Elliott. He came to Tennessee at the age of 17 to live with an uncle and aunt, Carl and Ruth Elliott of the Siam Community.
Marvin joined the Army in 1948 and served until his retirement in 1972 with the rank of E-7. During his Army career, he served three tours in Germany and three tours in Vietnam. During his service time, he married Maxine Castleberry of New Mexico and they had one child, a son Dean Elliott. They were divorced in 1961. In 1967, he married Jeannette Nave Johnson of Elizabethton.
After military retirement, Marvin worked at Mountain Home Veterans Hospital and then the Carter County School System. During those years, he attended Steed College where he received both an Associate Degree and a Bachelors Degree in Business. He also found time to enjoy his hobby of woodworking. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 581, Unicoi County.
Marvin was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette, in 2009. He is survived by his son Dean Elliott of Kentucky; Two Step-daughters Faye Brown of Arizona and Sheryl Long of Johnson City; Seven Grandchildren and Six Great Grandchildren; Brothers Rease Elliott of Washington State and Jackie Elliott of Texas; and a Sister, Ruby Nave of Florida. He is also survived by numerous Nieces and Nephews.
Mr. Elliott's service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Memorial Funeral Chapel. Rev. Gary Edwards and Rev. Ronnie Campbell will be officiating. There will be a Masonic Service conducted by Unicoi Lodge # 581 following the funeral service. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until the beginning of the service.
Mr. Elliott will be interred at the Mountain Home National Cemetery in Johnson City at 11 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2011. Military Honors and Pallbearers will be provided by the American Legion and the Tennessee National Guard. Friends and family may meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. to go to the cemetery.
