Sadly he died at the young age of 49 by means of a fatal gunshot wound. It is uncertain if it was by his own hand or if he was murdered. According to an article in the Crowley, LA paper published in 1954.....
"A corner's jury returned a verdict of "death from hemorrhage and shock due to gunshot wounds" in the early morning death of Olney M Jones, 50 chief engineer of the Louisiana Irrigation and Mill Company here. Jones was found dead near a stream behind the Roller Pumping plant near Crowley between 5am and 6am today by his son-in-law, John Wesley Bullard, after he had been missed by his wife at their residence near the plant."
Family members believe that he was murdered as there were "several gunshot wounds" and he was not the kind of man who would commit suicide.
