In Jesse's obituary it stated he was born in Poughkeepsie, New York. His family was living in Tompkins County at the time of his birth. Jesse was a true pioneer; when just a child of two years his family moved to the Ohio frontier by covered wagon. They settled in Springfield, then moved to Seneca County where Jesse married his wife Caroline Emery on December 25, 1843. They soon moved by covered wagon to Henry County where they cleared land and built a log cabin home. In 1863 they sold their farm and moved to Middlebury, Indiana where they bought an 80 acre farm. Jesse and Caroline contributed to the developement of the Ohio frontier leaving their marks in the history of Ohio and Indiana.
