Killed in a mine explosion at the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad's Vulcan Mine on February 18, 1896, in New Castle, Garfield County, Colorado. Forty-nine miners died in the explosion. For a detailed description of the catastrophe, see https://usminedisasters.miningquiz.com and search by the name of the state.
His baby daughter, Clara, had perished just one week before the explosion and was buried in an unmarked grave at Highland Cemetery. Weeks after the explosion, once his body was recovered, he was buried next to Clara. The current memorial for both of their graves was designed by a descendant and installed at a Larrigan family reunion in 2004, with family members from all over the country participating in the service. Thomas left a pregnant wife, Rosella (Lietz) Larrigan, and two little boys, James and Thomas.
