Joseph Achatz Taken by Death: Ill for Months
Came to Carroll County from Germany in 1883; Lived on Farm
Joseph Achatz, long time resident of Carroll county, died this morning about 6:30 o'clock at his home, 234 South Clark street, where he had been an invalid for years. Two and a half years ago Mr. Achatz suffered the amputation of his right leg. He died well fortified with the last sacraments of the church.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 9:30 o'clock at Ss. Peter's and Paul's church with solemn requiem high mass. The Rev. Father John Achatz of Rockwell City, a son, will be the celebrant of the mass; the Rev. Father Schultes of Churdan, deacon, and the Rev. Father Joseph Dalhoff, of Early, sub-deacon.
Came to U. S. in 1883
Joseph Achatz was born in Rehmanfelden, Niederbayern, Germany, July 3, 1850 and received his education in his native land, where he grew to manhood. He was employed in a saw mill and also served three years in the imperial army.
He was married to Miss Mary Kraus in Germany, in 1878, and then came to the United States April 15, 1883 and settled in Carroll county. Mr. Achatz first worked on a farm south of Carroll and three years later purchased a farm south of the city where he remained until he retired in 1909 and moved east of town in the home where Mrs. Achatz died in 1917. Since that time he has made his home with his son, Joseph Achatz, on South Clark street, where he died.
Six Children
Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Achatz, two died in infancy. The surviving are Joseph Achatz of Carroll, Mrs. Mary Roth of Geddes, S. D., and Rev. Father John Achatz of Rockwell City, Mrs. John Hansman, south of Carroll. He also leaves 12 grandchildren and one brother Alois Achatz in Germany. Two sisters preceded him in death.
The last 17 weeks of his life Mr. Achatz spent in bed, but in spite of his suffering was always cheerful and patient. He was a great reader and was fond of discussing politics with his friends. He was a member of the Holy Name society and a devout member of Ss. Peter and Paul's church.
Mrs. Roth arrived a week ago from Geddes, S. D., assisted in the care of her father.

Funeral rites for Joseph Achatz, who died Wednesday were held his morning at 9:30 o'clock in St. Peter and Paul's church with solemn requiem high mass, the Rev. John Achatz of Rockwell City, celebrant. The Rev. Father Arthur Poeckes was master of ceremonies, the Rev. Father Joseph Schultes of Churdan, deacon and the Rev. Father Joseph Dalhoff of Early, sub-deacon.
Burial was in the Ss. Peter and Paul's cemetery and the pallbearers were Fred Lappe, William Scharfenkamp, Ben Wibber, Frank Walz, Lambert Baumhover, and Isadore Hoffman. The Rev. Father Schenkelberg conducted the services at the grave.
