After her family's conversion, they emigrated to Nauvoo to join with the rest of the Saints. Hyrum's first wife, Jerusha, passed away in Kirtland.
After the martyrdom of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum, Mary fled with the rest of the Saints to Utah, her seven year old son Joseph F., who would later become sixth President of the Church, drove the wagon all the way there.
She died faithful to the Church, in the home of Apostle Heber C. Kimball.
Her home is now preserved at This is the Place State Park, at the base of Emigration Canyon in Salt Lake City, Utah.
