When the Titanic sank, Ernest climbed aboard the Up-side down Lifeboat Collapsible B.
His brother Fred died, along with all the other Lift Stewards on the Titanic.
Later in his life, Ernest would be haunted by the sight of a drowning little girl he saw after he was in the water. He said "But what could I do? In the water it was everyone for themselves".
Ernest Frederick Allen was one of the last surviving member of the Engineering Department on the Titanic, he died in 1968.
