Lloyd V. Hicks Rites Nov. 16

Funeral services for Lloyd V. Hicks, 71, of New Market, were held November 18 at the Madison Street Shum-Novinger Funeral Home conducted by Preacher Glenn Mitchell. Mr. Hicks died November 14, 1966 at Veterans Hospital in Omaha. New Market American Legion Post No. 300 was in charge of military honors at Old Memory Cemetery, New Market.

Lloyd Vallier Hicks was born Aug. 26, 1895 at New Market, Ia. His parents were Jasper Newton and Hester Ellen Hicks.

Val was a graduate of New Market High School with the class of 1914. He was active in band work as a baritone player and played with the high school and municipal bands, and traveled one summer with the F. J. Rogers Pony Show as a baritone player.

He started his working career counting eggs and weighing produce at Mason Brother's Store. He spent most of his working life as clerk and general manager of New Market Farmer's Union Store and manager of Cudahy Produce at New Market. He was an active farmer until August 1956 when he underwent major surgery and his health failed.

Val served in World War I with the 30th Division "Old Hickory" in France and Belgium. While he was in combat he was wounded badly, gassed, and reported dead. Val was a member of the New Market American Legion.

Besides his parents, Val was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters.

On Oct. 23, 1939 Val was married to Ara Johnson who survives, and two stepchildren: Mrs. Mildred Hance and Billy Johnson; also a girl, Karol Jayne, whom he helped rear; and one brother, Harry L. Hicks of Creston, Iowa.
