Nicholas was born in Robertson County, Tennessee to Richard Michael Rose and his wife Elizabeth Pope. He married Nancy Elizabeth McDonald, Sept 16, 1866.

Nicholas fought in the Civil War as a Confederate, serving under Robert E. Lee-Pvt, Co C, 14th Tennessee Reg (May 16, 1861-July 1, 1863). He was wounded in the left leg at Gettysburg. Nicholas saved his uniform and was buried in it.
