Russell James Barton was the fifth child of nine born to Silas and LaVida Barton. He was raised in Wallowa County. He worked as a carpenter as a young man but was primarily employed as a log truck driver throughout his working life. When his sons were young, he lived in Carson, Washington and later moved to the Tigard/Portland area.

He married Delores Elaine McDaniel on October 29, 1949 in Lewiston, Nez Perce County, Idaho and they were divorced March 18, 1954 in La Grande, Union County, Oregon. Two daughters, Christie and Janis, were born to this union and they were raised by their mother and maternal grandparents.

On September 30, 1955 Russell Barton and Betty Jane Swadener were married in Seattle. Their marriage lasted about six months but date of divorce is unknown. There were no children born to this union. Betty Jane Swadener retained her maiden name and never remarried.

On October 14, 1957 in Skamania County, Washington, Russell was married to Evelyn Yvonne Wilson Kimball and became stepfather to her son and daughter, Johnny Kimball and Michelle Kimball. In addition, two sons, Ross Eric Barton and Dwayne Earl Barton, were born to this union. After the children were grown, Russell and Yvonne were also divorced, date unknown.

Russell Barton was married for a fourth time to Virginia M. Alzner-Lang. The date of their divorce is unknown.

For a time, he had a domestic partnership with Jane Holt but was unattached at time of his death.

Russell Barton died at age 82 from complications of Parkinson's disease.

In addition to his children, he was survived by an older sister, Elvira Irene Sims of Lebanon, Oregon; a younger brother, Emmett Mearl Barton of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and three younger sisters, Vera Alberta Roop of Walla Walla, Washington, Shirley Ann Coffey of Newport, Oregon and Clarice Jean Kiesecker of Enterprise, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three older siblings: Ilene Marjorie Barton in 1942, Arnold Earl Barton in 2005 and Virgil Vaughn Barton in 2007.
