Christine Odelle Williamson Marlowe, 91, of Blacksburg, Va., died Thursday, December 9, 2010. She was born in Mecklenburg County, Va., May 10, 1919, to the late Henry Wesley Williamson and Etta Maude Forlines Williamson. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Thomas Johnson Marlowe; her brother and sister-in-law, John Alden and Marie Williamson; her brother-in-law, Tom Cole; and her infant grandchildren, Matthew Ryan Nichols and Faith Nicole Marlowe.

She is survived by her four children and three grandchildren; sons, Mike Marlowe and Don Marlowe, of Roanoke, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Pat Marlowe and their children, Alyssa and Peter, all of Blacksburg; daughter and son-in-law, Melody and Steve Nichols and their son, Keith, all of Charlottesville, Va.; her sister, Annie Laurie Cole; her sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Lewis Jones, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Christine grew up on her family's tobacco farm in Buffalo Junction, Va., with her three siblings.

In 1936, she graduated from Clarksville High School and moved to Raleigh, N.C., in the fall of 1937 to attend Meredith College and later Hardbarger's Business School, where she received her secretarial certification in 1939. Following her education, she began work as a secretary at N.C. State, where she met her husband, Tom. They married on March 3, 1945, a month before Tom shipped out to the Philippines. After Tom's military service, they moved to Asheville, N.C., then back to Southside Virginia, where their first son was born in 1949. In 1950 they moved to Starkville, Miss., and relocated to Stillwater, Okla., in 1952, where their twin sons were born January 1, 1953. Receiving the distinction of giving birth to Stillwater's first New Year's babies, Christine and her family were showered with free gifts from area merchants. Finally, in 1954, they settled in Blacksburg, Va., when Tom joined the faculty of VPI in the Animal Science Department, and the following year their daughter was born. Christine devoted herself to being a loving mother, homemaker and helpmate to her husband.

Christine was a vivacious hostess and enjoyed entertaining friends and her husband's colleagues. In their early years in Blacksburg, she and Tom often went ballroom dancing together. She was actively involved in the Faculty Wives Club at VPI for many years. Christine loved bridge, especially the social aspects of the game, and played in both a ladies' club, and a couple's group with her husband for many years. She was an active member of the Blacksburg Methodist Church for over 40 years, participating in Circle 5 and using her organizational skills in service to others. From 1969 to 1984 Christine utilized her exceptional typing skills as secretary for the Wesley Foundation, a Methodist campus ministry organization. She loved interacting with the Wesley college students, and remained in contact with many of them over the years. In later years, when Christine's difficulty in walking caused her to remain at home, she stayed connected with friends and family via the telephone. In 2001, Christine and Tom left the home they had built and enjoyed for 40 years and moved to Warm Hearth Village in the assisted living section of Kroontje Health Care Center. After Tom's death later that year, Christine continued to be an active member of the Warm Hearth community, participating in the Resident's Council and befriending residents and staff alike. Later she moved to the nursing care wing, where she was cared for lovingly and faithfully until her death. Her family wishes to give special thanks to the Kroontje staff, residents and their families for their care of and friendship with Christine over the years. Christine was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her.

The family will receive friends at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 14, 2010. Burial will be private. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at Blacksburg United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either The Virginia Tech Wesley Foundation, P.O. Box 458, Blacksburg, Va. 24063; or The Warm Hearth Foundation, 1000 Litton Lane, Blacksburg, Va. 24060.
