Zilpha Loretta Moon, 85, Springfield, MO died Friday Dec 3, 1999 after a long and courageous fight with Alzheimer's. Zilpha was born March 17, 1914 in Springfield Mo and was the second of three children of Bert (Henry) E and Ona Mertel.

She graduated from Senior High School and later in her life received a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master's Degree in guidance and Counseling from Southwest Missouri State Teacher's College. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.

She married Parker F Moon on March 26, 1933. During WW II she worked at O'Reilly General Hospital in Springfield, Mo for which she received a service ribbon. Memberships included American Association of University Women; a charter member of the Springfield Orchid Society; Hickory Hills County Club; and Springfield Ladies Golf Association where she was a past president.

She was treasured by her family and an inspiration to those who knew her and had a brilliant intellect with an insatiable desire for knowledge, that included global issues, nature and environment and the world around her. She was a wonderful mother, homemaker, gourmet cook and accomplished seamstress.

She is survived by her husband, attorney Parker F Moon; a daughter, Celeste E Groce and her husband Robert V Groce; a son Fred Charles Moon and his wife Marilynn, all of Springfield; a brother Dr Holly E Mertel, Bluffton SC; a sister, Zealia B Kirkpatrick, Springfield; three grandchildren, Steven F Groce, Shari K DeArmon, and John Parker Moon of all of Springfield and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 am Friday Dec 10, 1999 in Christ Episcapol Church, Springfield with the Rev James Moon officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens.
