"Funeral Rites Held for V. M. Frodden
"Alameda, July 2. -- Private funeral services for Volkert M. Frodden, 102, 535 Santa Clara Avenue, who died at his home on Friday, were held on Monday at the George Murphy Chapel, 2312 Central Avenue. A resident of Alameda for over 75 years, Frodden still was residing at the time of his death on the same property he purchased in 1876.
"Born on the island of Fohr, at that time a possession of Denmark, Frodden came to the United States at the age of 14. After living in Connecticut and New York, he moved to San Francisco in 1870 and a few months later settled permanently in Alameda, where he worked as a building contractor.
"From 1891 to 1917, he served as superintendent of streets in Alameda. During his period in office, he introduced the macadam street-paving process which his family says, had not been used in California before. Frodden was a member of Encinal Odd Fellows Lodge No. 160 and of Oak Grove Masonic Lodge No. 215. He is survived by his daughter, Mrs. Dorette Luhisen, with whom he made his home, and a grandson, Robert Luhisen of Alameda."
