George Speri Sperti was a famous Italian-American inventor, best known for creating Preparation H. However, Dr. Sperti touched the lives of millions of people with many of his other significant inventions, including the Sperti Ultraviolet Lamp and KVa Power Meter. Dr. Sperti also invented the first practical technique to irradiate milk to add Vitamin D, without changing the flavor of the milk. He donated most of the money he received for patents to the University of Cincinnati and the Institutum Divi-Thomae. Dr. Sperti graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 1923. Shortly afterwards, he was named Director of the Research Laboratory. His invention of an Ultraviolet "Vitamin D" lamp for irradiating milk was sold to General Foods for $300,000. In an incredible feat of generosity, Sperti donated this entire amount to the University to continue basic research. In 1935, Sperti founded a new scientific institute which he named Institutum Divi Thomae. The purpose was to focus on anti-cancer research, however a cell derivative which stimulated healthy cell growth found a huge market as Preparation H.
