Mary Ann Paul, a daughter of Andrew Paul and the former Miss Mary Ann Pressly, was born in the bounds of Cedar Springs in Abbeville County, South Carolina on the 27th of April 1813. Her parents were both from early settler families of the district.

On December 15th 1831, Mary Ann married James J. Devlin; whose family were also descendants from early Irish settlers. This union would be blessed with ten known children:

Martha Jane "Mattie" {m. Neel}(1834-1907)
Sarah "Sallie" Mary (1838-1905)
John Andrew (1840-1901)
William Paul (1843-1925)
Catherine Lucretia {m. Purdy}(1846-1916)
Emma {m. Watson}(1848-1903)
Robert Hillary (1850-1918)
Nina Estelle "Essie"{m. Muse} (1853-1941)¹
Lura Ann {m. Cogburn}(1856-1924)

James J. and Mary Ann Devlin, life members of Cedar Springs A.R.P., would raise their children to follow in the believe of godliness, honor, compassion and love of community. Mary Ann Paul Devlin departed this life on July 5th 1888 in the 75th year of her age. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband in the churchyard cemetery.
