James J. Devlin, the youngest son of John Devlin, Esq. and the former Miss Mary Esther Boggs, was born in the bounds of Smithville in Abbeville County, South Carolina on June 30th 1802. James was baptized on the 17th of July 1803 in the church he would worship and serve his entire life near the place of his birth. His parents and grandparents were charter members of Cedar Springs A. R. P. and a congregation that would be a part of his youth and adulthood.

It was here that James met and married the former Mary Ann Paul on December 15th 1831. Mary was the daughter of Andrew and Mary Paul of Abbeville. James and Mary lived on a large farm near Cedar Springs and raised tennine known children:

James J. Devlin departed this life on the 21st of July 1883 at the age of 81 years and 21 days. He is buried in the churchyard cemetery at Cedar Springs A. R. P.
