Born in Barboursville, West Virginia on May 9, 1927 to Earl and Irma Bias. He was an All-State football player for Barboursville High School in 1944. Bob joined the U.S. Navy and served as an Electricians Mate on board LST 754 during World War II. He later moved to Detroit, Michigan, he met and married Betty in 1952. Bob joined the Detroit Fire Department in 1953 and retired at the rank of Captain in 1987.
