My great-aunt, Mary Devlin Muse, was the daughter of Rev. Joseph Brainard Muse and Nina Essie (née Devlin) Muse. "Mary Devlin", as she was known by her family, was born on the 11th day of September 1887 in Verdery, Greenwood County, SC. Mary Devlin was named for her maternal grandmother, Mary A. Devlin of Cedar Springs, SC. Her father was primarily a farmer and an associate minister at several A.R.P. churches in the surrounding Abbeville and Greenwood Counties. She was the sister of Lois A. Muse Kerr (1873-1942), Coral Annie Muse Lyon (1876-1955), Janie Muse Smith (1876-1963), Minnie M. Muse (1879-1960), Robert Lowry Muse (1881-1911), Joseph Pressly Muse (1888-1968){my grandfather}and Sarah Eunice Muse Kibler (1891-1911).

Mary Devlin Muse was a well respected school teacher at various schools around South Carolina; before she married John E. Elvington on May 25, 1912 at Cedar Springs A.R.P. Church on May 25, 1912. She and John moved to Florence, South Carolina, where John was a teacher. Sadly, Mary died due to complications after the delivery of her first child on January 14, 1915. Mary & John's infant daughter, Eunice, lived with her grandparents until John remarried.

Mary Devlin Muse Elvington was buried in the Muse Family plot at Cedar Springs, beside her sister, Sarah Eunice Kibler (1891-1911) and her brother, Robert Lowry Muse (1881-1911).
