My grandmother, Elizabeth Sligh Greneker Gaston, was born on the 9th of December 1901 in Augusta, Georgia. Her parents were Eugene Ferguson Greneker and Marie Moore Greneker. She had two sisters: Gene Marie (1904-2000), Pickens Calhoun (1910-1973) and a brother Eugene Ferguson, Jr. (1910-1993).

On December 24, 1923, Elizabeth S. Greneker married James Bostwick Gaston II, son of Judge J. B. and Janie Bentley Gaston of Gainesville, Georgia. The wedding took place at the First Christian Church in Augusta, Georgia. They had three children: Betty (1924), Marie (1930-1951) and my father, James Bostwick (1926-2015).

Nannie, as her grandchildren & family called her, was a quite shy person; but she could engage you for hours with stories of her childhood and tales of dancing with Strom Thurman at her first cotillion. She was a great-great grand niece of John C. Calhoun on her mother's side of the family. They say Nannie had John C's quick wit and compromising diplomacy; which a course only added to her charm & grace.

Nannie lived most of her life in Augusta and Greenville, SC; were her husband had several business interests with baseball. But you usually could find them in Florida during Spring Training, scouting young players. It was down in Venice, Florida where Nannie lived out her days, living with her son Jim & daughter-in-law Mary. She died on the 11th day of April 1987. Nannie is buried at Westover Memorial Park Cemetery, next to her husband, Jim Sr. and not far away from her parents, sisters and young daughters.
