My great-grandfather, Eugene Ferguson Greneker, son of Thomas Ferguson Greneker and the former Miss Cornelia Gertrude Sligh, was born in Newberry, South Carolina on the 8th of August 1872. His father was Editor/Publisher of The Newberry Herald.

Eugene accepted the place of flagman on the material train of the C&G Railroad in 1889 and this started a lifelong career. In 1896, now Capt. Eugene Greneker had the position formerly occupied by his cousin Thomas B. Greneker; who had died earlier that year. He would hold this position for the next 34 years.

Captain Greneker married Miss Marie Moore in Augusta Georgia on May 2, 1900. The Grenekers lived in Augusta and where blessed with the following children:
Elizabeth Sligh {m. Gaston}(1901-1987)
Gene Marie (1904-2000)
Pickens Calhoun {m. Moorer}(1910-1973)
Eugene Ferguson (1910-1993)

A devoted son, brother, husband, father and grandfather, Eugene Ferguson Greneker, Sr. departed this life on the 24th of July 1930 in the 57th year of his age. He was laid to rest at Westover Cemetery near his granddaughter, Betty Gaston, who had preceded him.
