Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. She was a member of the 1956 United States Olympic team that competed in the Summer Olympic Games that year in Melbourne, Australia. She won the Gold Medal in the women's 100 metre butterfly event, setting a then-Olympic record of 1:11, and besting two of her American teammates, who took the Silver and Bronze Medals behind her. She also won during the Games the Silver Medal as part of the American team that came in second in the women's 4×100 metre freestyle relay. Previous to the Games she had twenty-four different Amateur Athletic Union swimming championships, overcoming a childhood bout of polio that left her with a permanent limp. She was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1966.
