DEATH CLAIMS TWO KANAWHANS
Mrs. William H. Baker came to Kossuth in 1877 and to Kanawha in 1899
Kanawha, Iowa, August 4: Kanawha lost one of its pioneer residents Thursday afternoon when Mrs. William H. Baker passed away. She had been ill for three years.
Marjorie Ann Shakelford was born on the 14th day of September, 1857, in Missouri. With the exception of one year which was spent in California, she lived in Missouri until after her marriage to William H. Baker. In 1877 the Bakers moved to Kossuth county and settled near Algona. They lived there until 1899 when they moved to Kanawha. They have made their home here since that time.
Mr. and Mrs. Baker were blessed with seven children, six of whom are living. They are Mrs. Archie Ames, Mrs. George McNeigh and Mark of Kanawha; William of South Dakota; George of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Jessie, of Grandview, Washington, and Mrs. May Farrow, who passed away last spring.
Mrs. Baker leaves her four sons, two daughters, her husband, twenty grandchildren and five great grandchildren, besides two sisters, Mrs. Sally Esters and Mrs. Mary Tucker; two brothers, Frank Shakelford and the Rev. Charles Shakelford and a number of friends to mourn her passing.
Rev. Scheerer delivered the funeral sermon at the M. E. church Sunday afternoon. Two of the children were unable to attend the funeral due to the fact that they live in distant states.
People from out of town who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. George C. Baker of Nebraska City, Nebraska; Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Shakelford, Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Shakelford and family, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Harr, Mr. and Mrs. M. D.
