Frank graduated from the University of Kansas with a degree in English and served proudly in the United States Army. He was a paratrooper and spent 16 months in Vietnam as a helicopter door gunner based in Vung Tau on the South China Sea. He often spoke of the beauty of the countryside and his affection for the people and culture of South Vietnam. He received the Air Medal for meritorious achievement during aerial missions over hostile territory and the Army Commendation Medal for exceptionally meritorious service. He continued to serve his country as an analyst for the Smithsonian Institution.
