Gilbert E. Parker, 91, an ardent sportsman and conservationist who achieved prominence in the military, died Monday at Mission Bay Hospital.
In 1949, he retired as a colonel after serving 32 years in the Army.
During that time he served as head of the tactical section of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., and helped organize the Civilian Conservation Corps.
At the Pentagon, he headed Army Research and Development, for which he received a presidential citation.
And during World War II, he was chairman of a nine-member observers board for the European Theater for the War Department.
Mr. Parker participated in and won awards in 10 sports, including fishing in which he held the tarpon award in the Panama Canal Zone for 26 years.
He was executive head of the National Board for Promotion of Rifle Practice.
After he retired from the Army, he served as acting president of the University of Nevada and then moved to San Diego.
For eight years, he summered in British Columbia, where he owned and operated a hunting and fishing lodge.
He was a member of various conservation organizations.
He served as chairman of the San Diego chapter of the Sierra Club for two years.
He also served on the Desert Protective Council of the Anza-Borrego Committee.
Survivors include a daughter, Girard Pico of San Diego; a sister, Leonore Green of Browns Summit, N.C.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3 p.m. tomorrow at the First Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Parker willed his body to UCSD.
The family suggests contributions to the Anza-Borrego Committee.

He willed his body to the UCSD School of Medicine.
Col. Parker, of Pacific Beach, died Monday in a hospital.
Born in Davenport, Iowa, he was a resident of the county for 33 years and served 32 years in the Army, seeing duty as head of the tactical section of the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Ga., and helping to organize the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He was a member of the Sierra Club's San Diego chapter and the Desert Protective Council's Anza-Borrego Committee.
Survivors include a daughter, Girard Pico of San Diego; a sister; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
