Son of the late Thomas & Agnes (Carroll) Newman.

Father Newman, O.P., received his early education in New Haven at the St. Mary Elementary School and St. Mary High School. He was professed a Dominican Friar in 1951 and was Ordained to the Priesthood at St. Dominic Church, Washington, D.C., on June 11, 1957.

He received a B.A. in Latin in 1952 from Providence College in Rhode Island, and an S.T.L. and S.T.Lt. in 1958 from the Pontifical University of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C. He received an S.T.D. in 1970 from the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.

From 1958 until 1990, Father Newman had assignments in the Teaching Apostolate of the Province of St. Joseph. He began teaching in 1958 at Aquinas College High School in Columbus, OH, and from 1960 to 1966, at Siena College in Memphis, TN.

From 1969 to 1971, he taught at Providence College in Rhode Island and from 1971-1990 at the Pontifical University of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, where he also served as Director of Field Education for the Dominican Seminarians.

Father Newman also spent semesters teaching at the St. Mary Seminary, Baltimore, in 1977, and Mount St. Mary Seminary, Emmitsburg from 1984-1986, and the Angelicum University in Rome, in 1980.

From 1990 until 2007, Father Newman served as Associate Pastor at St. Dominic Parish in Washington. In April of 2008, due to declining health, he began residence at the Center for Assisted Living at St. Dominic Priory in Washington.

Interment followed Mass of Christian Burial offered at the St. Dominic Catholic Church, Washington, Saturday, May 2, 2009. Arrangements were made by the Kalas Funeral Home, Oxon Hill, MD.
