Services are 10 a.m. Friday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Private burial is in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, with military rites conducted by American Legion Post 569/200 and VFW Post 1303. Visitation is one hour prior to services. Memorials to the Child Abuse Council, Moline.
Hershel was born Dec. 10, 1920, in Grantsburg, Ill., to Johnie Luther and Arizona Osban Abbott. He married Della Turner Dec. 19, 1939, in Kahoka, Mo.
Mr. Abbott was employed as a custodian for Rock Island School District 41 at Rock Island High School and Ridgewood School for 12 years, retiring in 1979. Earlier, he was employed at the former Macomber Steel Co., Rock Island, for 17 years.
He was a WWII Army Air Forces veteran, serving in the Fiji Islands with the 1530th Base Unit.
He enjoyed fishing, going to the boat and gardening.
Survivors include his wife, Della; sons, Hershel W. Abbott Jr. and Michael Dale Abbott, both of Milan; six grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
