(NOTE: Issacher B. Dewey probably never had his portrait taken prior to the Civil War. However, during the 10 month period that the 86th Illinois was in the Nashville, Tennessee area in 1862-63, Issacher, like most of the Union soldiers in the Nashville area, probably took the time to sit for a portrait to send home to the loved ones that he left behind. These portraits were made either in the form of what was called a "tin type", or, more often, printed in the form of what was called a CDV. A CDV was a paper picture glued to a heavier card stock about the size of a modern day baseball card, and the soldiers didn't just have one or two copies made. Most of the time, they had a dozen or more made, so they could swap pictures with their tentmates, messmates and for their friends, in the 86th and back home.
Then Issacher survived the war and lived well into the 20th century. During his life, Issacher probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would dearly love to see a copy of whatever he had taken while he was in Nashville added to his Find A Grave site for all with an interest to see. However, I have yet to locate any of the family in the 1850 census and at the time of the 1855 New York State census, Issacher Dewey is still in New York state or is at least back in New York state if he ever went to Illinois prior to this;

The 55th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on October 31, 1861. Issacher B. Dewey joined this regiment in November of 1861 and may have been sent briefly to Chicago, but the regiment was then sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, where their training continued.
However, it is believed that Issacher was having some major health issues at this time and the army doctors finally decided that Issacher was not fit for the service at this time. Issacher was discharged from the service on February 20, 1862 and sent home. By July or August of 1862, Issacher apparently had made the decision that he was going to volunteer again if he had the opportunity. On August 11, 1862, Issacher Dewey volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S. Bean for service in the Union Army. Issacher lists Farmington as his place of residence at the time he volunteered.

On the afternoon of August 15th, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private Issacher Dewey, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come.
Just for your information:
Chester Dewey d. February 20, 1865 and is buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY. So are his two wives. The first wife was an Elizabeth ?? who died in 1847. The second wife was Harriet Perkins, who died in 1869.
As far as Roxana (Crosby) Dewey, I seriously question whether she ever came to IL. I can only ASSUME, at this point, that she remarried about 1851. Her second husband was Warren A. Tiffany, s/o Elisha and Lucy Tiffany. He appears in the 1850 Federal Census with a wife, Lucy, and five children. Warren and Roxana had two daughters, Louisa E. Tiffany (b. 1852; m. Crandall) and Mary Elizabeth Tiffany (b. 1854; m. White). Warren A. Tiffany died 29 December 1905. Roxana (Crosby) Dewey Tiffany d. 2 September 1893 (per tombstone; however, some online family records have year as 1894). Both Warren A. and Roxanna are buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Lewis, NY.

His two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Nickerson and Mrs. Emma Baker were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Dewey was an old soldier, and his many friends will mourn his death."

The 55th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on October 31, 1861. Issacher B. Dewey joined this regiment in November of 1861 and may have been sent briefly to Chicago, but the regiment was then sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, where their training continued.
However, it is believed that Issacher was having some major health issues at this time and the army doctors finally decided that Issacher was not fit for the service at this time. Issacher was discharged from the service on February 20, 1862 and sent home. By July or August of 1862, Issacher apparently had made the decision that he was going to volunteer again if he had the opportunity. On August 11, 1862, Issacher Dewey volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S. Bean for service in the Union Army. Issacher lists Farmington as his place of residence at the time he volunteered.

On the afternoon of August 15th, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private Issacher Dewey, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come.

Chester Dewey d. February 20, 1865 and is buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY. So are his two wives. The first wife was an Elizabeth ?? who died in 1847. The second wife was Harriet Perkins, who died in 1869.
As far as Roxana (Crosby) Dewey, I seriously question whether she ever came to IL. I can only ASSUME, at this point, that she remarried about 1851. Her second husband was Warren A. Tiffany, s/o Elisha and Lucy Tiffany. He appears in the 1850 Federal Census with a wife, Lucy, and five children. Warren and Roxana had two daughters, Louisa E. Tiffany (b. 1852; m. Crandall) and Mary Elizabeth Tiffany (b. 1854; m. White). Warren A. Tiffany died 29 December 1905. Roxana (Crosby) Dewey Tiffany d. 2 September 1893 (per tombstone; however, some online family records have year as 1894). Both Warren A. and Roxanna are buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Lewis, NY.

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT newspaper, of Liberal, Kansas, published the following notice in its Friday, December 9, 1910 edition of the paper;
"I. B. Dewey who formerly lived here, died at Hutchenson on December 1, after a short illness. The remains were shipped to Harbine, Nebr., and burial made there last Friday. His two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Nickerson and Mrs. Emma Baker were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Dewey was an old soldier, and his many friends will mourn his death."

(NOTE: Issacher B. Dewey probably never had his portrait taken prior to the Civil War. However, during the 10 month period that the 86th Illinois was in the Nashville, Tennessee area in 1862-63, Issacher, like most of the Union soldiers in the Nashville area, probably took the time to sit for a portrait to send home to the loved ones that he left behind. These portraits were made either in the form of what was called a "tin type", or, more often, printed in the form of what was called a CDV. A CDV was a paper picture glued to a heavier card stock about the size of a modern day baseball card, and the soldiers didn't just have one or two copies made. Most of the time, they had a dozen or more made, so they could swap pictures with their tentmates, messmates and for their friends, in the 86th and back home.
Then Issacher survived the war and lived well into the 20th century. During his life, Issacher probably had his picture taken dozens of times. I would dearly love to see a copy of whatever he had taken while he was in Nashville added to his Find A Grave site for all with an interest to see. The 55th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on October 31, 1861. Issacher B. Dewey joined this regiment in November of 1861 and may have been sent briefly to Chicago, but the regiment was then sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, where their training continued.
However, it is believed that Issacher was having some major health issues at this time and the army doctors finally decided that Issacher was not fit for the service at this time. Issacher was discharged from the service on February 20, 1862 and sent home. By July or August of 1862, Issacher apparently had made the decision that he was going to volunteer again if he had the opportunity. On August 11, 1862, Issacher Dewey volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S. Bean for service in the Union Army. Issacher lists Farmington as his place of residence at the time he volunteered.

On the afternoon of August 15th, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private Issacher Dewey, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come.

Chester Dewey d. February 20, 1865 and is buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY. So are his two wives. The first wife was an Elizabeth ?? who died in 1847. The second wife was Harriet Perkins, who died in 1869.
As far as Roxana (Crosby) Dewey, I seriously question whether she ever came to IL. I can only ASSUME, at this point, that she remarried about 1851. Her second husband was Warren A. Tiffany, s/o Elisha and Lucy Tiffany. He appears in the 1850 Federal Census with a wife, Lucy, and five children. Warren and Roxana had two daughters, Louisa E. Tiffany (b. 1852; m. Crandall) and Mary Elizabeth Tiffany (b. 1854; m. White). Warren A. Tiffany died 29 December 1905. Roxana (Crosby) Dewey Tiffany d. 2 September 1893 (per tombstone; however, some online family records have year as 1894). Both Warren A. and Roxanna are buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Lewis, NY.

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT newspaper, of Liberal, Kansas, published the following notice in its Friday, December 9, 1910 edition of the paper;
"I. B. Dewey who formerly lived here, died at Hutchenson on December 1, after a short illness. The remains were shipped to Harbine, Nebr., and burial made there last Friday. His two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Nickerson and Mrs. Emma Baker were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Dewey was an old soldier, and his many friends will mourn his death."

On November 9, 1861, Issacher B. Dewey volunteered for a three month enlistment in the service in the early stages of the Civil War. The company he volunteered to serve in became Co. B of the 55th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. Issacher gave his place of residence at the time he enlisted as Elmwood, Peoria County, Illinois.

The 55th Illinois Infantry was organized at Camp Douglas, Chicago, Illinois and mustered into Federal service on October 31, 1861. Issacher B. Dewey joined this regiment in November of 1861 and may have been sent briefly to Chicago, but the regiment was then sent to Benton Barracks, Missouri, where their training continued.
However, it is believed that Issacher was having some major health issues at this time and the army doctors finally decided that Issacher was not fit for the service at this time. Issacher was discharged from the service on February 20, 1862 and sent home. By July or August of 1862, Issacher apparently had made the decision that he was going to volunteer again if he had the opportunity. On August 11, 1862, Issacher Dewey volunteered to serve in a company which was being raised in Trivoli, Illinois by James S. Bean for service in the Union Army. Issacher lists Farmington as his place of residence at the time he volunteered.

On the afternoon of August 15th, Bean led about 90 Trivoli volunteers into Peoria, where they went into camp at Camp Lyon, near present day Glen Oak Park. On August 27, 1862, 83 of those Trivoli volunteers, including now Private Issacher Dewey, were mustered in as Company D of the 86th Regiment of Illinois Volunteer Infantry. James S. Bean, who was elected by the men of Co. D to be their Captain, was elected and promoted to Major of the entire regiment, so the men of Co. D then elected Frank Hitchcock to be their Captain.
On September 7, 1862, the men of the 86th Illinois marched out the gates of Camp Lyon, through the streets of Peoria, with much fanfare, and boarded a train bound for Camp Joe Holt, Jeffersonville, Indiana. Four weeks later, the men of the 86th were in the field in Kentucky as part of Col. Daniel McCook's Brigade, chasing Confederate troops in Kentucky. On Oct. 8, 1862, the men of McCook's Brigade were engaged with those troops in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, the 86th Illinois suffering their first casualties. There would be many more to come.

Chester Dewey d. February 20, 1865 and is buried in the Temple Hill Cemetery, Geneseo, Livingston Co, NY. So are his two wives. The first wife was an Elizabeth ?? who died in 1847. The second wife was Harriet Perkins, who died in 1869.
As far as Roxana (Crosby) Dewey, I seriously question whether she ever came to IL. I can only ASSUME, at this point, that she remarried about 1851. Her second husband was Warren A. Tiffany, s/o Elisha and Lucy Tiffany. He appears in the 1850 Federal Census with a wife, Lucy, and five children. Warren and Roxana had two daughters, Louisa E. Tiffany (b. 1852; m. Crandall) and Mary Elizabeth Tiffany (b. 1854; m. White). Warren A. Tiffany died 29 December 1905. Roxana (Crosby) Dewey Tiffany d. 2 September 1893 (per tombstone; however, some online family records have year as 1894). Both Warren A. and Roxanna are buried in the Glendale Cemetery, Lewis, NY.

THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT newspaper, of Liberal, Kansas, published the following notice in its Friday, December 9, 1910 edition of the paper;
"I. B. Dewey who formerly lived here, died at Hutchenson on December 1, after a short illness. The remains were shipped to Harbine, Nebr., and burial made there last Friday. His two daughters, Mrs. L. A. Nickerson and Mrs. Emma Baker were at his bedside when he died. Mr. Dewey was an old soldier, and his many friends will mourn his death."
