John was the second son of Horace Trego Atkinson and Caroline VanPelt (Frankenfield) Atkinson. He was married twice. His first wife was Elsie W. (Earl) Atkinson. They had one child John Lee "Jack" Atkinson Jr. After Elsie's death in 1952, he married her younger sister Margaret Ella "Ella" (Earl) Bond. John worked as a Maintenance Supervisor for the Hatboro-Horsham School District, he retired in 1958. He died at his home in Hatboro.
