Joe Wesley Goodwin
Arrangements By: Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham
Aug 3, 2011

Joe Wesley Goodwin passed away August 2 at the Clyde Cosper Texas State Veterans' Home in Bonham after an extended battle with Alzheimers.

He was born April 13, 1922, in Fannin County, Texas, the fourth child of Terrell Benton Goodwin and Ella McCarter Goodwin.

In the late 1930s he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps helping to build terraces and levees to protect farmland from flood and erosion in southern Fannin and northern Hunt Counties. During his time in the CCC he worked constructing stone facilities at Bonham State Park. At that time a large part of his paycheck went home to his family struggling to meet the needs of younger sisters and his parents during the Great Depression.

At the beginning of World War II he was called to serve his country in the U.S. Army. After basic training he worked as a communications specialist at various bases around the U.S. including Clovis, New Mexico, Pocatello, Idaho, and San Francisco, California. He was probably most proud of his work at the base in Clovis, where he and a few other men were the first on site when the base began.

At the end of the war he returned home to Lamasco to farm and help make a living for his parents and sisters.

In 1948 he married Letha Pearl Brown. She passed away on December 15, 1992.

He worked for Bonham Cotton Mills until it closed about 1970 and then for Owen's Lumber until his retirement. After retirement he single handedly built and sold several houses.

Mr. Goodwin was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers; Terrell Benton Goodwin Jr. and Clint Goodwin, five sisters; Joyce Goodwin, Edith Goodwin Coonrod, Ola Pearl Goodwin Taylor, Dorothy Goodwin Hendry and Wanda Goodwin Barker.

He is survived by one son, Wes R. Goodwin and his wife Beverly of Sulphur Springs; one granddaughter, Marla Goodwin and her husband Ethan Whitlow of Bryan, Texas; one special honorary son, Hong Kwon Kim and his family of McKinney, Texas; two sisters Merle Goodwin Paulk Phillips of Vernon, Texas and Betty Goodwin Hendry of Roosevelt, Oklahoma plus many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation and rosary will be from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Wed. Aug. 3. The funeral will be at Cooper-Sorrells Funeral Home in Bonham at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 4 followed by burial in Lamasco Cemetery.
