Gladys Katherine Burdick ( Jay 6,Beriah5, Pardon4, Ezekiel3, Hubbard2, Robert1) was born 01 Apr 1890 to Ida May Ellsworth and Jay Burton Burdick. She was baptized October 1904 at College (Baptist) Church, by Rev. O.D. Patch. She married Alfred Alonzo Kroh 17 Aug 1910 at the home of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. O. Nash. Gladys died 24 Apr 1959 in Hillsdale, MI of liver cancer, and is buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Osseo, MI. The widower Alfred remarried after her death, to Edna Cox, a widow.

Gladys was a poetess. One of her short poems:

Trials

Don't say the thing's impossible,
The chances are, you'll rue it,
Because some fool who doesn't know
Will come along and do it!"

Gladys Katherine (later she spells it Katharine) Burdick was born April 1, 1890 at noon, at Hillsdale Michigan on W. Bacon Street. When she was the age of one year, the family moved from Hillsdale to Chicago where Gladys lived until April 1902. Gladys Burdick attended Joseph Medill Kindergarten, Chicago, and Victor F. Lawson Grade School. The family returned to Hillsdale.

Gladys' mother Ida May was taken to a sanitarium and Gladys lived until 1908 with her Aunt and Uncle O.C. Nash and family, attending school from 6th grade thru high school. Gladys went into 6th grade in Hillsdale with Irene Ayres as teacher.

Gladys entered high school in1904 in Hillsdale. She took four years of Latin, receiving Latin diploma. She also took German (?got 100?), Music, English Lit, Civics, US History, Mod. Medieval Hist. Ancient Hist. Algebra, Physics, etc. She sang in a double quartet and was "one of a bunch giving history and prophesy at graduation." Her main friends were Ethel Woodward and Ruth Andrews, and Ned Ford was her first "Beau". Gladys graduated in 1908.

She took teacher's exam and passed; taught 1908-1909 4 ½ miles south of Waldron. The next year she taught about 6 miles S.E. of Hillsdale.

Gladys first met her future husband Alfred at the home of Mrs. Emma J. Miller about 6 miles south of Hillsdale at a party for Emma's son, Hoyt in October 1909. The couple quickly fell in love, and married Aug 17, 1910.

They lived at the groom's home for 8 months, moving about ½ mile north of there the following spring, where their first child, Ruth Estelle Kroh was born June 10, 1911. And their second daughter, Virginia Belle (later Virginia "Marguerite") was born Friday July 23, 1915. Alfreda Marie Kroh was born at 236 West Street, Hillsdale Tuesday at 1PM Aug 21, 1917. Dr. S.B. Frankhauser attending physician. Marie H??th worked for the family.

They were in two accidents caused by (the horse) Moxie "bolting" One caused broken collar bone of Auntie Nash. Al visited Gladys at her Aunt Belle's. They enjoyed a big Fourth of July celebration at "Uncle Ed's brother's (Uncle Dar)", complete with ice cream and fireworks.

Gladys wrote that she "Took enuf piano lessons from Luella Anderson and Addie Prentiss to enable her to play for (her) own amusement!! " She said of herself: Hobby- collecting handkerchiefs and writing poetry. Also likes typing, fancy soaps, aprons, perfume nice underwear also "hobbies"! Friends were Ruth Andrews Davis and Ethel Woodward Lusk before they were married.

Gladys' granddaughter Pat said that she remembers a story of Gladys setting her skirt on fire when she was standing on the stairs, as a suicide attempt. She remembers stories about her being highly strung, but I did not get that impression from (my mother-in-law) her daughter, Ruth. According to a journal Gladys kept, her mother-in-law laid down the law to her when Gladys and Alfred were newlyweds, living with them, that it was not her home to do things as she pleased.

Alfred and Gladys sold their farm in Frontier and moved to a trailer on Bird Lake Rd. near Osseo.

Following Gladys' death, Alfred sold the trailer and purchased a small house on Hwy M34 near Osseo where he resided with his second wife, Edna Cox until he passed away.
