He had said once that he was a "Buck" Sgt when in the service, but his stone indicated PFC, likely a field promotion or granted due to responsibilities, not reflected in the official record.

I requested his military records when I began my family quest many years ago, but was advised, his records along with thousands of others were destroyed in a fire at Saint Louis many years ago.

He said that he was a "Buck Sgt" but you couldn't get the records to prove it. If you'll look at the picture of him in a jacket, those are Buck Sgt. stripes. In the first picture with his wife the stripes are of a Corporal. The next level after Buck would be Staff Sgt. with three stripe pointing upward and on semi-circle connected to the uprights.
