David Sterling Mayes was born in Monroe, Michigan on March 25, 1942. David was the oldest son born from the union of the late Benjamin Sterling Mayes and the late Gladys (Linkes) Mayes. He attended Custer Elementary School.
David was very talented with his hands and a skilled salesman. He owned and operated Doctor Dave's masonry restoration business for many years. He excelled in educating others as well and taught many young men the building trades.
He married Judy Perry in Toledo, Ohio on April 24, 1994.
He was a man of faith and knew his Scripture well. David enjoyed music and Blue Grass Festivals and was also talented as a guitarist. He was notoriously frugal, and loved to chop wood to heat his home. David was handy around the house completing many projects and working in the garden.
He enjoyed his family, get-togethers, camping with his R.V.'s. David loved to line dance with his beloved Judy and they even taught lessons to others. As a young man, David enjoyed fishing and boating in Lake Erie with his brother Jerry.
David Sterling Mayes age 68 of Weston, Ohio passed away at 10:00pm, Tuesday, October 19, 2010 at the Wood County Hospital in Bowling Green, Ohio.
In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by two brothers: Robert Mayes and Ted W. Mayes
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife: Judith of Weston; five children: Shannon (Willow) Mayes, Jodi (Glenn) Cocagne, and Kelly Mayes all of Erie; Tim Collins of Ypsilanti and Jeff Collins of Monroe; two brothers: Jerry (Lynda) Costelli of Erie and Johnny (Debbie) Mayes of Monroe; five sisters: Betty (Phillip) Uhl of Luna Pier, Shirley Gillium of Monroe, Velvet (Randy) Rauton and Melody (Jack) Jordan both of Knoxville, Tennessee; and Heather (John) Chaney of Cleveland, Ohio; twelve grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may gather from 11:00am until a Celebration of His Life at 1:00pm, Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Merkle Funeral Service, 9156 Summit Street (734) 848-5185 in Erie, Michigan. The Rev. Roy Southerland pastor of Monroe Missionary Baptist Church will officiate.
