George L. May, 98, died peacefully on October 13, 2010. Mr. May was born February 12, 1912 near Ava, Missouri, to George W. and Ada Parmenter May, the sixth of eight children.
As a young man, George left school in order to begin working and supporting his family during the Depression; he chose to work as a messenger boy rather than continue the 10th grade. He showed initiative, and later learned Morse code and the teletype machine. Later, while in Gulfport, Mississippi, Mr. May passed the civil service examination. During World War II, he was assigned to the 10th Naval District - San Juan Puerto Rico Naval Air Station as an aircraft communicator. He worked there until the War ended, then returned to Vicksburg, Mississippi. Seven years later, he reached his career goal by becoming an air traffic controller and served the Federal Aviation Administration in that capacity until he retired in 1972.
George May married Grace Lusinger in 1942, and they had four daughters. While the family lived in Jackson, Mississippi, George and Grace were founding members of Wesley Methodist Church. Another move came in 1957 when George and Grace relocated with their girls to Nederland, TX where they were members of the Wesley Methodist Church of Nederland. Mr. May later helped form the First Southern Methodist Church in Port Arthur, TX. After retirement, George and Grace relocated to Austin where he loved to garden, follow the stock market, and attend meetings of the Capital City Coin Club. Until his very last days, he was a huge Houston Astros fan, and could easily embarrass most anyone in a game of checkers.
Mr. May was preceded in death by Grace and by his four sisters, Catherine May Shumaker, Florence May Cuevas, Frances May Swain, and Mary May Crow and three brothers, Charles May, Walter May and Bert May. He is survived by his four daughters, Charlotte May Sibley and her husband, Richard, of Nederland, TX; Carolyn May Hart of Lakeway, TX; Barbara May Theriot and her husband Harvey (Rusty) Theriot of Round Rock, TX; and Deborah May and her husband, John Gallagher, of Round Rock, TX. George was blessed with five grandchildren -- R. Duane Sibley, Neil Theriot, Amber Hart, Cara Hart Wilson and George Gallagher and five great grandchildren, Duane W. Sibley, Celeste Theriot, Chase Theriot, Grace Booth and Torsten Booth.
Family visitation will be held at Beck Funeral Home, Austin, Texas on Saturday, October 16, 2010 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Sunday, October 17, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at Beck, followed by interment at Giddings City Cemetery, Giddings, Texas.
