He wed Adeline Cornelia Fischer in Schenectady, NY and they came to Henry, Marshall County, Illinois, where Adeline died. He then married Sarah Hamm. In Henry he opened a grocery store, then went into carriage trade & hardware. The couple had 4 children -Jennie, Florence, Joseph Jr. & Gertrude May. He died in California where he apparently went to live with Mary Hall Blood, daughter from his first marriage.
