SEYMOUR, Ind. - Roy Arthur Matthews, 77, died Oct. 11, 2010, at Covered Bridge Health Campus.

He was born in Windsor, Vt., Oct. 18, 1932, the son of Clifford and Marjorie (Bartlett) Matthews.

He was a 1950 graduate of Springfield (Vt.) High School and received his associate degree in business management from IUPUI Versailles and from Purdue in 1998.

Mr. Matthews served in the Army for one year as a member of the Rangers (paratroopers). He retired after 20 years from the U.S. Air Force and was then employed in telecommunications with Contel for 19 years.

He was active in the First Baptist Church, including as trustees chairman, Sunday school superintendent, choir member, and served on the counting committee, nominating committee and board of education. He was also a member of VFW #1925 and American Legion #89.

He volunteered with Meals on Wheels and was a clown through Giggles and More. He also enjoyed bowling.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Pulliam, whom he married April 25, 1982, in Seymour; two ex-wives, Mary Rye and Sandy Staley; seven children, Diane and Danny Matthews, Jeff Bryan, Thomas, John and Ronald Farace and Renée Decker; four sisters, Priscilla DeLong, Beverly Hobbs, Rosemarie Carr and Ginger Lowell; and 14 grandchildren.

Mr. Matthews was predeceased by a daughter, Terri Johns; infant brother, Guy Matthews; a sister, Betty Wade; and ex-wife, Darlene Bryan.

The celebration of his life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at the Voss Chapel where friends may call from 9:30 a.m. prior to the service officiated by the Rev. Larry Tingle.

Burial with military honors will follow in Riverview Cemetery.

Friends may also call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church, Seymour.
