REV. JOHN MILLS BIGHAM

John Mills Bigham, son of James Whyte Bigham and Mary Isabella Mills, was born at Wellridge, Chester Co., South Carolina on May 17th 1875. He received his primary education under his mother in the home until he was fourteen years old. He then attended the public schools until he entered Erskine College in 1893 and graduating in 1896.

He joined the church at Hopewell, South Carolina in1897 and was received as a student of Theology by the First Presbytery, at Hickory Grove, South Carolina in the fall of 1897 and pursued his studies in Erskine Theological Seminary.

Rev. Bigham was licensed by the First Presbytery at Winnsboro, South Carolina in 1899. After supplying churches in Alexander Co., North Carolina and at White Oak, Georgia. He was called to Huntersville and Gilead in Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina and was ordained and installed pastor of these churches November 27th 1900. Under his leadership the church at Huntersville erected a new and beautiful house of worship.

Rev. Bigham was twice married. First to Lois Griffith, with whom he had two sons: James Baxter (1908-1981) and John A. (1913-2001). Then to Marilla Ewart; with whom he had two daughters: Lucia (1920-1999) and Marianna (1926-1964).
