Ryland, was the son of Irene D. Tschan of Temple Terrace FL and Ryland W. Drawdy of Wellsboro PA, enlisting in the US Marine Corps in Jacksonville FL on April 3, 1964.

Assigned to Company E, 2d Battalion, 4th Marines, arriving off the coast of Chu Lai South Vietnam on May 7, 1965, PFC Drawdy and the Marines of BLT 2/4 (Battalion Landing Team) began landing over RED Beach. There they would conduct counter guerrilla operations until they would meet head on with the 1 VC (Viet Cong) Regiment on Operation Starlite.

At 0900 Hours on August 18, 1965 during Operation Starlite Company E was assigned the task to attack the enemy from the vicinity of the Nam Yen village complex in Binh Son District of Quang Ngai Province and size the ridge towards Hill 50. During the assault the Marines encountered enemy 60 mm mortar as well as automatic weapons fire. Two Marines were killed in the action by the time their objective was sized, one of those men was PFC Drawdy who was killed by fragmentation wounds to his head and chest as a result of contact with the hostile forces.
