Smitty enlisted in the US Army 28 Sep 1942 in San Antonio, Texas, and upon finishing his term with the Army, joined the U S Air Force where he continued to serve his country serving overseas during World War II, The Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He retired as a CMSGT, and continued to serve the military by becoming an ROTC instructor. Smitty loved the United States and was very proud to serve her.
Smitty and Flora lived all over the world during his time in the military, and they made a point of coming home every couple of years to see their children and grandchildren.
He was a true southern gentleman, a wonderful father and an incredible grandfather. He is very dearly missed.
