Queen Mother of Egypt. Born Nazli Sabri, she was the daughter of H.E. Abdu'r-Rahim Pasha Sabri, Minister of Agriculture and Governor of Cairo. On May 26, 1919, she married King Ahmed Fuad at the Bustan Palace, Cairo. The couple had five children, which included the future King Farouk I and four daughters, with Princess Fawzia who became Queen Consort of Iran. After the death of King Fuad in 1936, her son Farouk became the new King of Egypt and she lived an independent life as a widow. Because of tensions in the relationship with her son, she left Egypt, went to the United States, converted to Catholicism in 1950 and took the name Mary Elizabeth. As a result she was deprived of her rights and titles in Egypt. At the time of her death, Queen Nazli possessed one of the largest jewelry collection in the world and topped the list as the world's richest and most elegant woman.
